or we can just do it.
The
the oceans are possibly the most important element in the make-up
of our planet. So why do we so seriously abuse them?
Could
it be that we the inhabitants are ignorant to their importance
to life on Earth? Whatever the reason, our oceans are in
a state of deterioration and the life it supports is diminishing
rapidly.
Where
does one start? How can the multitude of problems the oceans
are faced with be addressed? The answer does not lay with
one organization. It will take the combined effort of a
vast number of organizations, all focusing on selected issues
and working to an overall plan.
With
this strategy in mind, OCEANGUARD will focus on saving the jewel
of all the oceans - the Great Barrier Reef.
Why?
Besides natural attrition caused by storms and cyclones, the
Great Barrier Reef is slowly losing its battle to survive.
It is under siege on a number of man made battle fronts: overfishing,
prawn trawling, coral bleaching, coastal development, mining,
pollution, farm runoffs, spiraling tourism, politics and last
but not least, the coral eating Crown of Thorns Starfish which
alone is eating the Great Barrier Reef alive. But since last
year, the greatest enemy of the Reef is now global warming and
the coral bleaching attributed to it. |
