or we can just do it.
Working
in concert with other environmental organizations and the relative
authorities, OCEANGUARD is planning to embark on one of the most
challenging environmental battles of our time - the rescue of sections
of the Great Barrier Reef that are capable of surviving rising
sea temperatures.
With
a goal of returning these reef areas back to their natural state,
an umbrella strategy will be worked out with various environmental
organizations to achieve such an outcome. Each group will focus
on one battle front or Barrier Reef issue with the support of
the other groups.
For
it's part, OCEANGUARD will undertake a plan to combat the third
Crown-of-thorns plague on selected reefs.
Over
the last thirty years, the Great Barrier Reef has been severely
damaged by two plagues of these starfish. With a third plague
already in progress, the plight of the surviving coral is a perilous
one. For at any time, immanently, a full outbreak of Crown-of-thorns
starfish will occur, unleashing millions of these coral-eating
predators upon an already besieged reef. Though, when the third
plague began, the Authority in charge of the Reef publicly stated
that it would not stand by and see the Reef devastated again.
Unbelievably the government of the day refused funds for the
Authority's control plan. Only a concerned public can reverse
this catastrophe.
While
this Great Barrier Reef operation is underway, monitoring of
other coral reef ecosystems around the world can be implemented
so that the experience gathered during the Barrier Reef programme
can be applied to any other ecosystem needing aid.
The
cost of this programme is a formidable one.
To
offset this cost, OCEANGUARD plans mounting a scientific and
political task of such magnitude it will require the effort of
everyone who cares about coral reefs. OCEANGUARD will coordinate
the management and action programmes, enabling volunteers from
the public to work side by side with professional coral reef
managers and scientists in a wide variety of challenging and
educational programmes.
To
enhance public awareness and participation, OCEANGUARD will encourage
corporations and businesses to sponsor and implement major media
events like traveling art exhibitions and music concerts.
This environmental battle has to be a celebration, a joining
of spirits to heal an earthly wound and preserve a matchless
beauty and scientific laboratory for the generations to come.
To
initiate this grand plan, OCEAN GUARD specifically appeals to
all those who have an affinity with the ocean to support it. |
